Bhuj, Kutch : To ensure the safety of birds during the upcoming Uttarayan festival, the Kutch Forest Department has launched the 'Karuna Abhiyan – 2026'. Running from January 10 to January 20, this initiative focuses on rescuing injured birds and preventing the use of lethal kite strings.
As part of the campaign, Forest Range Officers in Bhachau, Nakhatrana, and Anjar conducted intense search operations against the sale of banned Chinese Manjha (plastic string) and Tukkal. Teams visited local kite vendors to ensure no prohibited items were being sold that could cause severe injuries to birds.
Joint Operations and Public Awareness
In Bhachau, a joint rally was organized by the regional and expansion forest staff to sensitize both traders and citizens. The Forest Department has issued specific guidelines to protect avian life during the festival:
- Restricted Timing : Citizens are urged not to fly kites before 9:00 AM and after 5:00 PM, as these are peak hours for bird movement.
- Control Rooms : A dedicated control room has been established at the Bhachau Range Office to handle emergencies and reports of injured birds.
- Collaborative Effort : The campaign is being supported by various NGOs and social organizations across Kutch.
The authorities emphasized that using Chinese Manjha is a punishable offense and requested kite enthusiasts to use only traditional cotton strings (Sadi Dori) to celebrate the festival safely.
