Severe Cold Wave Grips Kutch : Nalia at 6°C, Bhuj at 8.6°C | Milk Production Declines as Life Comes to a Standstill

Bhuj, Kutch : With only a few hours left for the festival of Uttarayan, Kutch continues to reel under a severe cold wave. Icy winds blowing from North India have intensified the chill across the district. Today, Nalia recorded a minimum temperature of 6°C, while the district headquarters, Bhuj, witnessed a sharp drop to 8.6°C. Kandla also felt the tremors with a temperature of 12°C.

Cold in Kutch

The bone-chilling cold has disrupted normal life, making warm clothes essential even during the daytime as the sun fails to provide much relief against the freezing winds.

Impact on Animal Husbandry and Milk Production

In a concerning development, the extreme cold has directly affected the livestock in Kutch. Due to the intense frost and freezing conditions, there has been a significant decline in milk production. Livestock owners report that animals are producing less milk due to health stress caused by the weather. To protect their cattle, pastoralists are resorting to using gunny bags as covers and lighting bonfires (tapnu) near the sheds.

Struggles for Schoolchildren and Early Workers

The early morning hours have become particularly difficult for school-going children and laborers involved in milk and newspaper distribution. The combination of high humidity and icy winds has made outdoor activities challenging. The usually bustling streets of Kutch cities remain deserted until late morning as people prefer to stay indoors.

According to the Meteorological Department, this cold wave is expected to persist through the Uttarayan period, keeping the entire region in a deep freeze.
