Kutch University Kicks Off Geological Fieldwork 2026 : Hosting Over 50 Students from Nagpur and Kumaun Universities

Bhuj, Kutch: The Department of Geosciences at Krantiguru Shyamji Krishna Verma Kutch University has officially commenced its annual geological fieldwork. This year, the department is leading a significant academic collaboration, hosting over 50 students from Nagpur University and Kumaun University (Nainital).

Kutch is globally recognized as a "Textbook of Geology" due to its unique rock formations and diverse geological features. For over 200 years, researchers from across the world, including organizations like NASA and ISRO, have visited this region to study its rich history.

Academic Synergy and Expertise

The fieldwork, which started on January 10, 2026, and will continue through February, is being led by Prof. Subhash Bhandari (Head of Department) and Dr. Gaurav D. Chauhan. On January 9, Dr. Chauhan provided a detailed briefing and a guided tour of the Geological Museum to the visiting students, setting the stage for the month-long exploration.

  • Seismology & Structural Geology: Understanding the seismic activity and fault lines of the region.

  • Marine & Renewable Geoscience: Studying the coastal dynamics and sustainable energy potential.

"This fieldwork is designed to enhance the practical skills of MSc and PhD students, directly benefiting them in their future careers in research and industry," stated Dr. Gaurav Chauhan.

Under the guidance of Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mohan Patel and Registrar Dr. Anil Gor, the department is providing specialized training. PhD scholars including Bhavyata Chavda, Chirag Parmar, Ishan Parmar, and others are actively mentoring junior students, fostering a culture of knowledge exchange.
