New Delhi: In a major move to ensure the safety of delivery partners, quick commerce giant Blinkit has completely removed the "10-minute delivery" claim from all its brand platforms. This decision follows strict instructions from Union Labor and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.
Following Blinkit's lead, other major players like Zomato, Swiggy, and Zepto are also expected to drop their ultra-fast delivery promises soon. The move aims to create a safer working environment for thousands of gig workers across India.
Government Intervention for Gig Workers
Minister Mansukh Mandaviya recently held a high-level meeting with officials from Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy, and Zomato. During the session, he emphasized that the lives of delivery personnel should not be endangered for the sake of speed. He advised companies to remove strict time-bound delivery commitments to prevent high-speed driving and accidents.
All companies in the meeting assured the government that they would remove these time-specific commitments from their advertisements, social media handles, and app platforms.
The Reason Behind the Change:
- Safety First: Gig worker unions have been protesting against 10-20 minute ultra-fast delivery models, citing them as unsafe and prone to road accidents.
- Worker Protests: Large-scale strikes were held by delivery partners on December 31, leading to a formal representation to the Labor Minister.
- Reduced Pressure: While delivery speed may not necessarily slow down significantly, there will no longer be a 'fixed guarantee,' allowing riders to deliver without immense psychological and physical pressure.
The companies will now focus on safe delivery rather than just fast delivery. This marks a significant shift in India's quick-commerce landscape, prioritizing human life over delivery minutes.
