Bhuj, Kutch : In a landmark achievement for the academic community of Kutch, Krantiguru Shyamji Krishna Verma Kutch University (KSKVKU) has been granted a patent by the Government of India for a revolutionary Rapid Wheat Quality Testing Method. The patent, issued under the Patents Act 1970, is valid for 20 years.
India is the world's second-largest producer of wheat, with production reaching 113.3-117.9 million tonnes in 2023-24. Ensuring the quality of this massive harvest is crucial for public health, especially across the 2,500 godowns of the Food Corporation of India (FCI).
From a National Challenge to a Global Solution
The journey began on June 2, 2021, when the FCI launched a national challenge to develop an accurate and fast method for testing wheat quality. Competing against various companies and institutes, the team from Kutch University rose to the top.
Under the guidance of Dr. Vijay Ram (Associate Professor, Dept. of Chemistry) and Dr. Girin Bakshi, students Kaushiki Banerjee and Jay Joshi, specializing in Analytical Chemistry, conducted rigorous experiments. After multiple rounds, they were invited to the FCI Lab in Delhi to demonstrate their method before experts, where they achieved resounding success.

- Speed & Accuracy: Provides a rapid alternative to traditional, time-consuming testing methods.
- Public Health: Enables FCI to quickly verify the quality of stored grains in godowns, ensuring safe consumption for the public.
- Commercial Value: The university plans to pursue commercial licensing of this patent in the near future.
University’s Excellence Recognized
Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mohan Patel and Registrar Dr. Anil Gor congratulated the team for bringing national laurels to Kutch University. This achievement highlights the high standards of research and practical skill-based education being provided at the institution.
